Bijar

Overview

Bījār is a city and capital of Bijar CountyKurdistan ProvinceIran. With an elevation of 1,940 meters, Bijar has been called the Roof of Iran.

The term bijar could be a variation of bajar (i.e. city in Kurdish) and the complete name of the city Bijar-e Garrus (city of Garrus, the old name for the province). Bijar is known internationally for its elegant and ancient carpet and rug designs.

The historical fort of Qam Cheqay (45 km NE of Bijar) probably dates back to the Median era and is the oldest castle in the Kurdistan province. The castle had been used until the Sasanid era and it is an example of the ancient architecture of Kurdistan.

As a destination, Bijar makes an interesting alternative to Takab, though while the scenery and size are similar, Bijar has more transport options.
The town is dominated by crumbling Nesar Kuh (Mt Nesar), at whose base a small ski resort runs in winter. You can also grass-ski here in summer and all gear can be hired on site.
Bijar also makes a good base for visiting Katale Khor Caves]and the crumbling ruins of the ancient Median fortress Qam Cheqay; their location, high above a hairpin bend of the Shahan River (a tribu-tary of the Qezel Owzan), is magnificent. The direct Zanjan–Takab bus passes right through the village of Qam Cheqay, though private taxis can also be arranged from Bijar (45km) or Takab (76km). The ruins are 5km west of the village.

Festivals & Events

  • Ashura Mud Ritual

Ashura for Shiites is a time of intense mourning and of re-enactment of Imam Hossein’s massacre. Self-flagellation and animal blood sacrifices are common, but in Bijar Shiites cover themselves in mud to represent their insignificance in relation to God. Emotions run high, so if you witness this (the timing varies with Ashura itself) be respectful and keep a low profile.
