Overview
Welcome to Iran’s Sunshine Coast, or Iran’s Costa del Sol. However you label it, say hello to this attractive island that, since the 1970s, has become a beach resort where visitors can swim, shop and sample a laid-back and relatively liberated local lifestyle. Iran’s most hedonistic spot, Kish is booming. Hotels, apartment blocks and retail complexes (it enjoys free-trade-zone status) dominate the once-empty desert landscape and domestic tourist numbers are on the rise, especially in winter, when it’s freezing cold on the main-land.
Kish is largely ignored by foreign tour-ists, though. That’s a shame, because a visit here is a great way to experience Iran from an altogether different perspective. Leave the sight-laden cities of the mainland and come here to enjoy sea, sand and sun in a relaxed atmosphere.
History
Kish Island is first recorded in the memoirs of Nearchus, the Greek sailor commissioned by Alexander the Great to explore the Per-sian Gulf in 325 BC. In the Middle Ages Kish became an important trading centre under its own powerful Arab dynasty and at one time supported a population of 40,000. The main town was Harireh, which is believed to be the town referred to by the poet Sa’di in his famous work Golestan (Rose Garden).
Kish was known for the quality of its pearls; when Marco Polo was visiting the imperial court in China, he remarked on the beauty of the pearls worn by one of the emperor’s wives and was told they had come from Kish. In the 14th century Kish fell into decline and it remained obscure until the 1970s, when it was developed as a semi-private retreat for the shah and his guests – complete with international air-port, luxury hotels and a casino.
Sights
An easy bicycle ride west of the port is Harireh, a splendid archaeological site comprises the remains of a large house with private qanat (underground water channel), a public hammam and a congregational mosque.
It was originally positioned next to a busy commercial port; across the road, you can still see access stairs cut into the rocky cliff, as well as rock-cut wells and channels that were part of workshops producing date nectar, once one of the island’s major exports.
Next to the tennis stadium is Kariz-e-Kish, a subterranean network of stone passageways built around a historic qanat. It’s said to have been built some 2500 years ago to collect, purify and store water for the inhabitants of Harireh; given the arid climate, water was, unsurprisingly, a precious commodity.
Activities
- Cycling
Kish is only 15km long and 8km wide, rising just 45m at its highest point. This means that cycling the flat, purpose-built bicycle path that follows the entire 40km of coastline is a popular way to spend a day. Bikes can be hired per hour from various stands around town.
- Diving
Although it cannot compare with, say, the Red Sea, Kish Island offers the best div-ing in Iran, with a series of healthy reefs that are well stocked with fish. You’ll find a smattering of dive centres on the island. Standards are fairly good, but check out the equipment before signing up for a dive. Also note that local instructors don’t always speak English. Women must wear a special wetsuit (provided) that covers the head.
- Swimming & Watersports
Kish is one of the very few places in Iran where swimming is actively encouraged. There are sandy, uncrowded beaches around most of the coast, but women must use the Ladies’ Beach behind the Kish Free Trade Organization Building. The official Gentlemen’s Beach and Beach Volleyball Sports Complex is near Twins Park, though in reality men can swim anywhere other than at the Ladies’ Beach.
- Ocean Water Park
Adrenaline rushes are guaranteed at this water park, which opened in early 2017 on Kish’s southern coast. The centrepiece is a 28m-high tower with several slides. Food and drinks are available. Note that there are days for women and days for men – ring ahead.
- Aquacom Cable Park WATER SPORTS
Located near the Grand Recreational Pier, Aquacom offers water-ski and wakeboard rides on the main beach. The cableway is 860m long and 160m wide and operates at a speed of up to 62km/h (novices can request a slower speed of 28km/h). Both men and women can participate, but women must wear an Islamic-style wetsuit.
