Overview
This little charmer of an island packs a big punch. What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in beauty and atmosphere. There’s only one road and virtually no cars, just motorbikes and tuk-tuks; there are no showy resorts, just a smattering of simple homestays. Most of its visitors are day trippers from Bandar Abbas or Qeshm, so even the only settlement, Hormoz, is a sleepy little village that kicks off its shoes each evening and relaxes into mellow contemplation of the setting sun. The rest of the 42-sq-km island is virtually uninhabited. The rugged interior is a scenic geological wonderland of different-coloured volcanic rocks and soils, while the coastline is a stunning mix of golden beaches and awesome bluffs.
History
Until the 14th century the island was called Jarun Island – Hormoz was the name of a long-established commercial town on the mainland. That changed when repeated, bloody Mongol raids prompted the 15th emir of Hormoz to seek a home where his head had a greater likelihood of remaining on his shoulders. He and many of his subjects moved first to Kish Island but finally settled on Jarun.
Standing sentinel over the narrow en-trance to the Persian Gulf, this new Hormoz soon became a grand emporium that attracted immigrants from the mainland and traders from as far away as India and Africa. Visitors to Hormoz described it as heavily fortified, bustling and opulent. European traders arrived and before long the Portuguese took over.
The Portuguese were eventually kicked out in the early 17th century and Shah Abbas I relocated the trading hub to the mainland fishing village of Gamerun, which he promptly named after himself (it’s now Bandar Abbas). Without commerce the power of Hormoz was shattered and its people reverted to a traditional fishing life-style. These days the fishing industry on the island has collapsed, and the local economy has been crippled as a result.

- Salt Cascades
One of Hormoz Island’s star attractions, these multicoloured geological formations that consist of cliffs and towers of petrified salt combined with various types of rock have a Tolkienesque appeal. The site is inland but can easily be reached from the main road.
- Snowy Mountains
It’s hard not to be enthralled by the eerie lunar landscape in Hormoz Island’s southwest, where a series of hills is covered with endless fields of salt crystals. And yes, they do look like ‘snowy mountains’!
- Mofanegh Beach
This scalloped sandy bay south of the island is blessed with a gorgeous stretch of golden sand.
- Museum & Art Gallery of Ahmad Nadalian
This quirky and very colourful museum – it occupies a brightly painted house smack dab in the village – shows the works of local artist Ahmad Na-dalian. Artworks include sand paintings and dolls made of recycled materials. There’s a video in English that explains his involve-ment with local communities.
